Third Baltimore Fire Official Suspended Following Recruit's Death

Feb. 16, 2007
Fire Academy Instructor Lt. Barry Broyles became the third fire official to be suspended following the death of 29-year-old Racheal Wilson.

BALTIMORE-- Another Baltimore city fire official has been suspended after the death of a recruit during a training exercise last week.

City officials said Fire Academy Instructor Lt. Barry Broyles was suspended without pay Thursday. Two other officials -- Division Chief of Training Kenneth Hyde and Lead Fire Instructor Lt. Joseph Crest -- were suspended earlier this week.

Rachael Wilson, 29, a firefighter paramedic apprentice, collapsed Friday during a routine training exercise in a vacant rowhome in Baltimore. She later died at the hospital.

She was one of 24 recruits taking part in the exercise and was on the third floor with two other trainees responsible for punching holes to ventilate the building. A fire had been set on the second floor.

WBAL TV 11 News learned Wilson suffered severe burns to her face, an indication that something may have caused her to remove her protective mask. The cause and manner of Wilson's death are still pending.

Officials continue to investigate.
