Several people were left homeless by a fire overnight in Allston.
NewsCenter 5's Jim Morelli reported that smoke caused more problems than flames at 1375 Commonwealth Ave. The fire was confined to the basement of the apartment building but all the floors and all the tenants got smoked out.
"When I was hearing the noises and smelled a little smoke, I thought it was just people smoking downstairs," resident Suana Perez said.
Officials said 24 people were displaced by the 1 a.m. fire in the 13-unit building.
"We're working with six people right now who don't have anyplace to go. All the other tenants have found places to stay tonight with family and friends," a fire official said.
Perez ended up staying with an aunt.
"The smoke started coming and that's when you heard the fire alarm and that's when I decided to wake everybody up, because I was really already asleep," she said.
Perez and other residents waited outside in the cold for more than two hours, she said.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
