A three-alarm fire damaged an apartment building in northwest Houston Wednesday night, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Residents of the Luxor Park Apartments in the 5800 block of West Sunforest Drive near West Tidwell Road called 911 when they saw smoke at about 8:45 p.m.
Houston firefighters decided they needed extra manpower shortly after they arrived at the scene.
"Our units said it appeared fire was spreading from the laundromat to the apartments," Deputy Chief Terry Stone said. "Fire started coming though the roof so we called for additional units to cut the fire off."
One resident was in his kitchen when he smelled something coming from his bathroom.
"When I went back to the restroom I discovered it," Ron Moon said. "I looked at the floor beneath the tub and that's when I started seeing vapors of black smoke coming from beneath the floor. I knew right then and there that there was a fire."
Fire officials said five units were damaged. Two units sustained damage from the flames and two others were damaged by smoke and water. The laundry room was destroyed.
Witnesses told investigators that they saw two men throw something into the laundry room and run away. Arson investigators are working to determine if the fire was intentionally set.
The apartment owner found a place for all the displaced residents to stay.
The American Red Cross went to the scene to help the victims.
No injuries were reported.
