The men and women of the Cleveland Fire Department are now better protected to do battle against heat and flames.

Cleveland firefighters are getting new and improved turn-out gear that can withstand temperatures up to 1,200 degrees.

That's higher than the current gear, which the fire department said is very outdated.

"We did discover some of the turn-out gear has been as long as 12 years," said Chief Paul Stubbs.

Boxes full of the gear are ready to be distributed. Each set costs about $1,200.
