Seven people were evacuated after flames broke out in a Manchester apartment building Wednesday morning.
Fire officials said that it took about an hour to get the fire under control in the Colby Lane building. Seven residents got out ahead of the flames, but officials said they lost all their belongings. The Red Cross was assisting the residents.
Chief Joe Kane said that because of the way smoke was leaving the building out a front window, firefighters first thought that the fire started on the second floor.
"Once they got in the building, they discovered that the fire was actually on the first floor and had already worked its way up to the second floor throughout the building," Kane said.
Investigators said that it appeared that a space heater tipped over and ignited carpeting.
