Despite Fires, Nebraska Gets Just $5M From Feds

Nebraska saw several wildfire in the western part of the state in the summer of 2006, but the state won't receive as much federal firefighting money as other states. Nebraska is 37th on a list of federal fire grants, getting a little more than $5 million. The money is for fire trucks and other gear. In August, wildfires burned nearly 100 square miles of land near Chadron and came within feet of Chadron State College. Cherry County battled a blaze near Valentine in July and damages to homes and buildings topped $1.25 million, according to the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency. The figure does not include any damage to public infrastructure or government property.
