The firefighter remains in the burn center.

A Doniphan firefighter, Jim Schafer, was transferred to the St. Elizabeth Burn Center in Lincoln after suffering second-degree burns over 30 percent of his body on Friday.

Doniphan Fire Chief Mike Meyer said he did not know how Schafer received his burns and probably will not find out until he has an opportunity to talk to the injured firefighter.

Meyer said another Doniphan firefighter, Ron Kubik, also suffered burns, but was treated and released from St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

After suffering their burns, Meyer said, Kubik and Schafer were able to get to a Doniphan fire truck, which Kubik drove to a safe area, before radioing for medical assistance.

Meyer said the firefighters then were taken by Grand Island ambulance to St. Francis Medical Center for treatment, with Schafer later being transferred to the St. Elizabeth Burn Center.

The fire occurred Friday afternoon in a cornfield near Doniphan. The Doniphan Fire Department and several other fire departments responded to fight the fire.
