Investigators remain at the scene of six-alarm fire that caused millions of dollars in damage at a large warehouse early Wednesday in the Natomas area of Sacramento, fire officials said.
Firefighters received a call at 1:06 a.m. of a fire on North Freeway Boulevard. Crews arrived to discover an inferno, with flames shooting up to 50 feet high into the night sky. About 120 firefighters responded to the area.
Warehouse tenant PianoDisc, a company that installs player piano kits on traditional pianos, suffered major damage and other businesses were also impacted, fire officials said. Some of the pianos lost were valued at $60,000 each, a representative of the business said.
Officials said the building did not have fire sprinklers and was constructed before such safety features were required.
"I've seen fires, but I've never seen anything like this, ever," said Dennis Clements, who was working nearby Wednesday morning.
Jim Doucette, spokesman for the Sacramento Fire Department, said crews took a defensive stance against the raging blaze to prevent injuries.
"We pulled everybody out of the building and everybody off of the roof," Doucette said.
As of noon, investigators had yet to enter the building to look for a fire cause because of the dangerous state of the building.
The building also houses some churches, a real estate office, an accounting office and other businesses.
