Pennsylvania Borough Discontinues Fire Company

The Hanover Borough Council in York County is sticking with plans to discontinue service with one of its three fire companies.

The council voted in May to end its service with Company No. 1's firefighter and EMS services because of financial concerns and patient privacy issues. Since then, Company No. 1 said it has completed an audit, hired an accounting firm and adopted new patient privacy safeguards. But borough members said it's not enough.

"They have made assurances that they corrected these problems, but we don't have the confidence they have. That's why we made the change," said Hanover Borough Solicitor G. Steven McKonly.

"This comes as quite a shock to all of us because we were in negotiation with them to improve some of their concerns they had with the company. Then all of a sudden it's like they pulled the rug from underneath us," said Fire Company President Russell Calhoun.

Hanover Borough has contracted Penn Township to provide ambulance service when Company No. 1's contract ends in November.
