Pennsylvania Firefighters Fear I-70 Bridge May Collapse
Firefighters fear the bridge on Interstate 70, off the Dunningsville exit in Washington County, is going to collapse just like another bridge about six miles down the road.
A bridge along Interstate 70 near the junction with Interstate 79 partially collapsed recently. Amazingly, no one was seriously hurt.
Firefighters with the Ellsworth Somerset Volunteer Fire Department travel on the busy bridge and have made several complaints.
Firefighter Mark Milligan said, It has gotten progressively worse in the last six months.
Don Herbert of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said the bridge is classified as structurally deficient, but that doesn't mean it is not safe.
Instead of bimonthly inspections, PennDot has been performing daily inspections. Also, work is being done to fix the retaining wall until the bridge can be replaced.
