A Kansas City firefighter and his teenage son were killed Sunday in a car crash in Oklahoma.

The accident happened early in the morning near Perry, Okla.

State troopers told KMBC that Chris Ward, 38, and his son, Vaughn, 14, were riding in a car traveling south on Interstate 35 when the car drifted into the median, overcorrected and crossed both southbound lanes and struck a guardrail.

KMBC reported that Ward tried to flag down help on the highway and was struck and killed by a second vehicle. Vaughn Ward was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

Firefighters at Station 29 are mourning Ward.

"Chris was a gentle man with a kind nature. A smile came easily to Chris. He was well-liked throughout the department. His closest friends would tell you that by nature and by definition he was a family man," battalion Chief Joe Vitale said.

Ward's wife was behind the wheel of the car. Their 11-year-old son was also a passenger. They were both treated and released from hospitals. Chris Ward was a 10-year veteran of the fire department.
