A man and woman escaped their burning home Monday night with the help of their neighbor.

The fire at Orchard and Halleck streets was reported at about 9:30 p.m.

KMBC's Brenda Washington reported that a teenager ran home and got her mother. When Tricia Edwards got to the house, she said she heard an older woman inside yelling for help.

Edwards ran into the burning home and helped the woman and her husband to safety.

"I heard a woman cry, so I ran to the back and pulled her out and then I pulled her husband out," Edwards said. "The whole back of the house was in flames. I'm not real sure what happened. They said that they heard a TV explode in the front, so that might be what caused it."

The older woman suffered smoke inhalation. Her husband suffered burns and is reported in critical condition, Washington said.

A firefighter was also taken to the hospital with minor burns to his neck and hands.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
