SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A small fire burned a curtain and damaged part of a floor in the Utah State Capitol Monday morning.

Fire crews arrived just before 7 a.m. to reports that a curtain was on fire, said Fire Department spokesman Dennis McKone. By the time crews arrived, construction workers at the Capitol had already extinguished the flames.

The small fire burned an eight foot curtain and blackened part of the floor. The cause is under investigation. No construction work was going on in the room, and there was no monetary value placed on the damage because the area was scheduled for renovation anyway, McKone said.

The State Capitol is undergoing a $200 million renovation and construction work meant to make it more earthquake safe.

The building is scheduled to reopen by January 2008. Lawmakers and other state employees are working in a pair of office wings added to the complex.
