Frankfort's City Hall will remained closed today after a fire forced the evacuation of about 100 state workers yesterday.

The building, at 315 West Second Street, was evacuated and closed just before 9 a.m. after dispatchers for the city's 911 service smelled smoke.

With Frankfort's main fire station also in the building, firefighters were able to find and stop the fire quickly, Capt. Dan Shouse, a spokesman for Frankfort fire and emergency services, said.

The fire began in an electrical wire-filled crawlspace in the attic, Shouse said.

Electricians were working up into the day yesterday to restore full power to the building.

Although firefighters and emergency dispatchers were able to return to the building, the rest of the offices remain closed for cleanup, including the mayor's office, and the planning and building codes office.

Although firefighters were able to stop flames from spreading, public works department offices below the crawl space were damaged by water and smoke.

Officials were unsure exactly how much damage was caused.

The evacuation didn't disrupt the city's 911 service, Shouse said.

Dispatchers were relocated to a mobile command center briefly, while firefighters extinguished the flames and secured the building.

"We haven't missed any calls and the city was not in any danger of not having 911 services," Shouse said.

City hall will open for normal business hours on Monday.
