Blaze Started after Trucks Found on Fire in California
GORMAN, Calif. (AP) -- Two big-rigs collided early Thursday and burst into flames, sparking a brush fire and forcing the closure of Interstate 5, authorities said.
The fire began shortly after 4 a.m., on northbound Interstate 5, north of Highway 138. Both trucks caught fire after slamming into each other and one of them had a load of organic peroxide that is highly combustible, said Capt. Mark Savage of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. One person had minor injuries, he said.
The fire spread through low-lying brush and burned about 20 acres, authorities said.
Some motorists who were near the smoke from the trucks complained of feeling ill, said California Highway Patrol Office Kelly Carreno.
''It doesn't look like a clean smoke,'' Carreno said.
Traffic in both directions on Interstate 5 was diverted as hazardous materials crews began cleaning up the freeway.
