Sacramento, California Firefighter Dies After Battling Occupational Cancer

It is with great regret that the Sacramento Fire Department announces the passing of one of its own members, who passed away Saturday after battling occupational cancer.

SACRAMENTO -- It is with great regret that the Sacramento Fire Department announces the passing of one of its own members. Matt Bera, an Apparatus Operator, passed away Saturday after battling occupational cancer.

In February of 2004, Matt Bera was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Since that time, friends, family and colleagues have banned together to assist the family and host fundraising events to offset medical expenses not covered by insurance.

A member of the Sacramento City Fire Department since 1995, Matt was recently promoted to Apparatus Operator. He began at the department as a Fire Fighter Paramedic.

Matt leaves behind his wife of 15 years and three children, Megan, Lauren, and Nicolas.

A Full Honors Procession and Memorial service will be held on Friday, August 12, 2005.

The procession will begin at 10 a.m. and will head through the downtown area to pass by Fire Station 2, Matt's Fire house. Several Fire Companies and personnel will be standing along 13th and I St. at attention as the procession passes.

The memorial service will take place at the Capital Christian Center, 9470 Micron Avenue in Sacramento, at 10:30 a.m.
