FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) -- Two women died Saturday morning as a result of injuries suffered in a fire that investigators said was caused by children playing with matches.
''Two adult females suffered extensive injuries and died as a result,'' said Lt. Raul Castillo, a spokesman for the Fairfax County Fire Department. An adult male and the two children were able to get out of the home before firefighters arrive around 8 a.m., Castillo said.
The deceased were identified Saturday afternoon as Estefania Porro, 87, and her daughter, Rosa Porro, 46.
The fire caused about $600,000 in damage to three units of a townhouse row in the 3700 block of North Resser St. in the Bailey's Crossing section of the county. Utility service to nine other units was temporarily disconnected, displacing a total of 30 people.
''Smoke alarms in the adjacent units were activated, and one of the neighbors called 9-1-1,'' Castillo said.
About 60 firefighters from Fairfax and Arlington counties and the city of Falls Church were able to extinguish the flames in less than 30 minutes.
