PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) -- An Ohio University student has been charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of a couple whose charred remains were found in a burned apartment building last month.
A Wood County Circuit judge denied bond Friday for Drew Spencer, 33, of Parkersburg, a senior majoring in integrated math at Ohio University in Athens in southeast Ohio.
Parkersburg police Chief Bob Newell said Spencer was a neighbor and acquaintance of the victims, but declined to say what led investigators to him earlier this week.
The causes of death for John Nestor III, 31, and his girlfriend, Tracy Thompson, 31, haven't been released. Neither has the cause of the Feb. 5 fire, although Newell said he believes it was arson.
Thompson was a nursing student at West Virginia University-Parkersburg, where Spencer was a part-time math teacher for about five years. Newell said that connection has nothing to do with the case.
