DaimlerChrysler Donates Smart Car To Detroit Fire Department

DaimlerChrysler AG officials presented a unique emergency vehicle to the city's fire department and two checks for $25,000 each to local charities at a historic downtown fire house on Monday.

DETROIT (AP) -- DaimlerChrysler AG officials presented a unique emergency vehicle to the city's fire department and two checks for $25,000 each to local charities at a historic downtown fire house on Monday.

The 8-foot-4-inch-long Smart car in fire-engine red features flashing lights and can serve as an emergency vehicle, the automaker said. DaimlerChrysler's Smart small car division is part of the its Mercedes luxury division.

One of the $25,000 checks went to the Detroit Firefighter's association fund. The other was given to the Mayor's Time Public Safety Academy.

The association gives aid to disabled firefighters, widows and children of fallen firefighters. The academy provides entry-level academic and technical training in law enforcement, firefighting, emergency medical services and homeland or private security for Detroit students.

DaimlerChrysler has hosted North American International Auto Show press gatherings at the former Engine Company No. 1 fire house since 2002. Built in 1929, in now serves as a fire department administrative building.
