Florida Mobile Home Fires Kill Two

Two deaths were reported at two separate mobile home fires in Jefferson County on Saturday morning, said state and county officials.

At this time, foul play is not suspected in either fire, investigators said. The victims have not been formally identified by the State Fire Marshal - the lead investigator on both fires.

Lt. Joseph Steadman of the State Fire Marshal's Office said there was "extensive damage to both structures" and that "debris samples were collected for analysis" to determine the causes and origins.

"There's nothing to indicate that these fires were criminal in nature," he said. "There's nothing overtly suspicious about them."

A man died from injuries related to a fire reported at about 1:30 a.m. at 489 Oetinger Road, said Russell Aldred, a firefighter with Jefferson County Fire Rescue.

Less than six hours later, a second person died following a blaze at 271 Johnson Road, Steadman said. Aldred said he was told by other firefighters that a woman died in that fire.

Fire investigators haven't released the identities of either person or the causes of death because they're waiting for autopsy reports, Steadman said.

Maj. Bill Bullock said the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office had assisted the Fire Marshal at the scene of the fires and turned the investigations over to that office.

Steadman could not say when the Fire Marshal expects to identify the victims or release causes of the fires.
