Fire officials have ruled that a fire last month that killed a man was caused by careless use of smoking material.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- Fire officials have ruled that a fire last month that killed a man was caused by careless use of smoking material.

Steven Dusz, 51, was smoking in bed when the blaze began on Oct. 8. He died of smoke inhalation and burn injuries, fire investigators said.

Lauryl Ronnenberg, who owns the home, tried to rescue Dusz. Fire officials said she made it out of the house.
