PITTSFIELD, ME -- A town firefighter injured in a New Year's Day crash has died.

Todd M. Noble, 32, died Thursday at Eastern Maine Medical Center. He was taken to the Bangor hospital with head injuries after the Chevrolet Blazer he was driving slid off icy southbound lanes of Interstate 95 and crashed into a tree.

Pittsfield firefighters responded to the Palmyra crash.

"Upon coming to the scene, we saw a vehicle that was familiar to us," said Capt. Michael Havey earlier this week. "It was one of our firefighters."

"It was a shock to everybody that was there," said Pittsfield Fire Chief Bernard Williams.

Noble had been a firefighter for 16 years, having joined the force as a teenager. He was also a member of the Canaan Fire Department.

"Todd was a good firefighter and a good person," Bernard said Thursday. "He's going to be missed. It's going to be tough going for a long spell."

Noble graduated from Maine Central Institute in 1991. He owned Four Seasons Waste Removal, a Pittsfield business.

A funeral for Noble will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel in Pittsfield.

A fund has been set up to aid Noble's family. Donations in care of Scott Noble may be sent to Merrill Merchants Bank, 27 Main St., Pittsfield, ME 04967.
