(Crown Heights-WABC, June 14, 2005) -- Three people were killed -- two of them fatally stabbed during a family dispute -- before their home exploded in a fourth-alarm fire in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn.
Eyewitness News reporter Carolina Tarazona is live in Crown Heights with more.
According to police, the victims were attacked during a family dispute at 577 Midwood Avenue just after three o'clock this morning. The house then exploded in flames, apparently set by a family member fleeing the two-story building.
Firefighters rushed into the blazing house but were turned back by the intense heat and smoke. One firefighter was briefly trapped before escaping the home.
Police tell Eyewitness News, two of the dead people -- a man and a woman -- were found on the second floor. The third dead person was found in the basement, and was so badly burned that authorities were unable to determine the age or gender of the victim.
Two other residents -- a man and a woman -- were also stabbed and taken to area hospitals in unknown condition.
At least twelve firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion. The suspect fled the scene. He was described as a male family member.
