Woman and Child Found Dead in Collapse of Building Where Immigrants Lived in Turin, Italy
March 7, 2005
TURIN, Italy (AP) -- A small, two-story building where some immigrants made their home on Turin's outskirts collapsed Sunday night, killing a woman and her young daughter, police said.
Turin police headquarters said they were too busy handling the collapse to immediately give details, but they confirmed a report by the Italian news agency ANSA that the bodies of the woman and her 8-year-old daughter were pulled from the wreckage shortly after the collapse.
ANSA said the building, in poor condition, was officially uninhabited, but police said they couldn't immediately confirm that.
Two men suffered fractures in the collapse and were hospitalized, ANSA said.
Firefighters were digging through the debris for any other victims.
ANSA said that immigrants from eastern Europe had been living without permission in the building, but didn't give nationalities.
The cause of the collapse wasn't immediately known.
