In the wake of terrorist attacks on the London transit system this morning, transportation officials in Philadelphia said they had moved quickly to put extra security measures into place.
SEPTA spokesman Richard Maloney said that the measures were plans that the agency has practiced repeatedly since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in this country and the terrorist attack on the Madrid commuter system in March 2004.
While refusing to give details, Maloney said that SEPTA, working with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, had undergone several "security audits" in recent years, pinpointing spots in the local system that might be particularly vulnerable to attack. Those places, he said, were where security has been heightened today.
The spokesman stressed that federal officials, who notified SEPTA of the London attacks soon after they occurred, reported that there were aware of no current threats to U.S. targets.
