PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A fire in a two-story row house in Southwest Philadelphia killed a 2-year-old boy and seriously injured his mother Tuesday, authorities said.

Firefighters responding to the 5:37 a.m. alarm reported heavy smoke on the first and second floors of the home.

Isaiah Walker, found in a second-floor bedroom, was pronounced dead at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, officials said. Authorities said Tonia Kay, 24, got her 1-year-old daughter to safety but was unable to rescue the boy.

Kay, injured by smoke inhalation, was listed in critical but stable condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Officials said the blaze started in an electrical outlet in a rear bedroom.
