SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) -- A Metrolink commuter train with passengers onboard collided with a van, causing life-threatening injuries to at least one person inside the vehicle, a dispatcher said.

The train was traveling to the Los Angeles area and crashed into a van in Canyon Country, just outside Santa Clarita, said Eddie Pickett, supervising dispatcher for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

A man inside the van was taken to a hospital with traumatic injuries following the crash shortly before 5 a.m., Pickett said.

It was unknown how many passengers were onboard the train and whether any were injured.

A phone call to a Metrolink spokesman seeking comment was not immediately returned.

Authorities were investigating the crash.
