School officials ordered the evacuation of Akron's East High after smoke was detected on the building's second floor Wednesday afternoon.

Akron firefighters arrived on the scene at 2:21 p.m., four minutes after an alarm was triggered.

Students returned to classes about 2:40, and the school day ended at 3:15 p.m. About 700 students attend the school at 80 Brittain Road.

A school official extinguished the fire, found in a metal wastebasket in a restroom, said Fire Capt. Larry Whytsell.

Whytsell said there were no injuries or property damage. The fire was contained to the wastebasket.

About 2:30 p.m., students were allowed to return to the building. They were kept in the first-floor gymnasium and cafeteria for about 10 minutes while firefighters used smoke ejectors -- special fans -- to clear remaining smoke from the second floor.

Whytsell said a fire investigator will attempt to determine how the fire began.
