Kentucky Remembers 9/11, Three Years Later

I lost a friend I had studied abroad with. Many others lost sons and daughters, husbands and wives, mothers and fathers.

Even if you knew no one who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the memory of that day will live with all of us.

To commemorate Patriot Day, here are a few ideas:

FRIDAY

The Dorn Veterans Hospital is hosting a Service of Remembrance in the George J. Mitchell Chapel at noon Friday.

The chapel is on the first floor of the main building. The hospital is on Garners Ferry Road at I-77.

SATURDAY

The Newberry Opera House bell will chime at 8:45 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:43 a.m. and 10:10 a.m. Saturday the approximate times when hijacked planes struck the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon and crashed in Pennsylvania.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the opera house will show a taped remembrance. Admission is free.

Folks who wear an American flag shirt to EdVenture Childrens Museum from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday will get an EdVenture magnet. There also will be crafts for children to express their thoughts about Sept. 11.

The museum is at 211 Gervais St. The activities are free with museum admission.

Admission is $5.95 per child, $7.95 per adult, free for children 12 months and younger. Firefighters and police in uniform will be admitted free.

SUNDAY

A Welcome Home Rally to honor those who are in the military or have served, and those who died on 9/11, is set for 3 p.m. Sunday at Lexington District 1 stadium on Ball Park Road in Lexington. Admission is free.

If there is bad weather, the rally will move to White Knoll High School, 5643 Platt Springs Road Lexington. For details, call (803) 359-8400.
