North Carolina Firefighters, Police to Remember 9/11

Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis will host an exhibition softball game Saturday pitting the Concord and Kannapolis fire departments against the two cities' police departments. Admission is $5, and proceeds will go to the Special Olympics.The event will honor those who died in the line of duty on 9-11, show appreciation for police and firefighters and raise money for the Special Olympics.

Gates open at 5 p.m. The game starts at 7:05.

Fireworks will follow an awards ceremony.

Earlier in the day, Kannapolis and Concord police and fire departments, along with other employees from both cities, will host the second annual United Way Motorcycle Charity Ride.

The ride starts at the Alfred M. Brown Operations Center at 850 Warren C. Coleman Blvd. and ends at Bakers Creek Park in Kannapolis.

Riders will stop at five checkpoints along the route and pick up playing cards. At the end of the ride the best poker hand wins. Registration for one driver is $20, passengers are $5, and each additional hand of cards is $3.
