GUTTENBERG, Iowa (AP) -- A 5-year-old boy was killed near a fire station his father volunteers at when a tanker truck ran over him.
Jarren Moser died about 6 p.m. Tuesday near the Guttenberg Fire Station as he was riding a push scooter. His father, Paul Moser, was at the station helping with the weekly equipment check, authorities said.
The boy was run over by the tanker truck when it was moved to an alley by Assistant Fire Chief Michael Radl, 53, of Guttenberg.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, Radl pulled the truck away from the station and parked it while he inspected it. As he pulled out into the alley for a test drive, the child rode his scooter into the right front tire and fell off the scooter. The truck's right rear wheels rolled over him, according to the State Patrol's accident report.
''The driver never saw the child and was unaware he had even run over him,'' the State Patrol said.
Radl returned to the station when he heard the ambulance paged, officials said. The child was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Jarren's parents, who live in Garnavillo, described him as a happy, busy boy.
''We know it was an accident. It was nobody's fault. He loved to hang out at the fire station,'' said Misty Hendrickson, the boy's mother.
Paul Moser said his son loved being at the fire station.
''He was a dedicated little fireman. He often made siren noises when he rode his bicycle,'' he said.
City officials said the accident will be reviewed.
