June 2, 2005 -- Mayor Bloomberg honored 42 firefighters at City Hall yesterday for putting "their lives on the line to protect the rest of us."
Top honors at the FDNY's annual Medal Day ceremony went to 34-year-old Victor Rosa, who - along with other members of Ladder 138 - pulled 17 people from a burning six-story building in Jackson Heights, Queens.
One of the loudest ovations went to 37-year-old Jeffrey Cool, who survived a five-story leap to avoid burning to death in a horrific Bronx blaze.
Two of his brother firefighters didn't survive, and a third died in a separate Brooklyn fire on a day that has since come to be known as Black Sunday.
