A blown transformer was the cause of a grass fire that burned about an acre of land east of Aberdeen on Thursday.

Bath Fire Chief David Stahl said his department responded to the fire at 6200 E. U.S. Highway 12, about one mile from the Aberdeen Regional Airport, around 1 p.m.

The fire started in a field before moving through a shelterbelt. Authorities did not release the property owner's name.

The Aberdeen Rural Fire Department, Aberdeen Fire and Rescue, Brown County Emergency Management, Brown County Sheriff's Department and South Dakota Highway Patrol also responded.

Stahl said firefighters had the fire under control by 2 p.m. The Bath Fire Department continued monitoring for potential hot spots throughout the night.

Stahl said no buildings were ever in danger, but the blaze did burn a pile of rubble and an old car. No one was hurt and Stahl said the cost of damage was minimal.

About 25,000 gallons of water were trucked in to put out the blaze.
