Firefighters battled high winds at a fire engulfing a Kannapolis business Monday afternoon.
The fire started just before 2 p.m. at Wicker Specialty Co., 1815 N. Main St. An employee was able to get out, and no one was injured, Kannapolis spokesperson Jennifer Woodford said.
Someone working at a florist next door saw a gust of wind blow a metal scrap up from the ground, hitting power lines behind Wicker Specialty, Woodford said. Sparks fell on the building and apparently started the fire, she said.
Firefighters from Kannapolis, Concord, Landis, China Grove and Mount Mitchell responded. Some remained at the scene late Monday afternoon, pulling out burned merchandise and checking for hot spots, Woodford said.
