Blaze Lights up New Jersey Sky Overnight
(West New York-WABC, January 25, 2005) -- A huge fire lit up the skies in New Jersey overnight. It broke out in embroidery shop in the town of West New York. That is where we find reporter Jen Maxfield with the lastest on the story Tuesday morning.
The fire crews are still hard at work here, dealing with the four alarm fire that has shut down streets within a four block radius. In fact, at one point this fire was burning so intensely that the smoke could be seen and smelled on the west side of Manhattan.
It all started at 11:30 last night when fire broke out at fist floor embroidery workshop on 56th Street and Hudson avenue. The flames spread quickly to a second floor apartment where we are told the woman who lived there got out safely.
It took firefighters hours to get the blaze under control. And as a precautionary measure, they evacuated the neighboring building.
Here are the street closures you need to know about. Hudson avenue between 54th Avenue and 58th Street is closed, as are 56th and 57th Streets here in West New York between Hudson Avenue and Palisades Avenue.
Safety was a problem as firefighters fought the blaze, because of the subfreezing temperatures out here. Two firefighters were taken to the hospital with minor injuries after slipping and falling on the ice.
