FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) -- Flames raced through a condominium early Sunday, leaving dozens of people homeless and one person hospitalized with severe burns, a fire official said.
Firefighters were called about 3:30 a.m. to the Timberlane Village Garden Condominiums on the 7300 block of Lee Highway, said Raul Castillo, a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue spokesman.
The four-alarm fire started in a furnance on the top floor of the three-story building, he said. Debris was scattered around the scene, indicating there might have been an explosion.
''Venetian blinds are hanging from utility wires'' about 30 feet away, Castillo said.
As many as 100 people lived in the garden-style condominium, which was closed to residents Sunday. In the meantime, the Red Cross set up a shelter at nearby Timberlane Elementary School.
The burn victim was taken to Washington Hospital Center, Castillo said.
Damage from the fire is estimated at $1.5 million. The top floor of the building was severely damaged by the flames, Castillo said, while the lower units mostly suffered water damage.
