A man was found dead in a burning house in Fairway late this morning.

Police found the fire when they went to the house at 5933 Delmar St. to check on the man about 11:50 a.m. today. They had been called by someone who had been expecting the man to pick him up for a regular morning appointment. That person asked police to check on the man.

Authorities found the man about two to three feet inside the front door. The house was filled with clutter, said Division Chief Gary Lamons of Consolidated Fire District No. 2. The piles of furniture, papers and trash may have kept the man from escaping, Lamons said.

The clutter also slowed firefighters as they tried to put out the blaze. Damage from the fire was spread throughout the house, but investigators don't know yet where the fire started.

The victim, who appeared to be middle aged, was not identified while Johnson County Sheriff's deputies notify his relatives.
