Bay City, Michigan Firefighter Accused of Bilking Seniors
Martin Dean, 33, is accused of using his job as a firefighter to gain access to the Pine Towers Complex.
It's believed Dean used a key from the fire rigs to gain access to the complex lock box, which contains the master keys. That made it easy for him. He could get into any apartment he wanted to.
Detectives say Dean hit the complex during the early morning hours, while many residents were sleeping. It's believed he got inside at least five apartments, looking for prescription drugs.
The few times that residents confronted him, he said he was responding to a fire emergency.
Dean was caught by the residents themselves, who saw the security feed and noticed a man unlocking into the black box and getting inside.
Some are upset with management, who they say they believe didn't take them seriously enough.
Bay City Fire Chief Doug Doefer wants to let people know that Dean was off duty when this allegedly happened. And once it was discovered, appropriate measures were taken.
He added that firefighters don't have keys on them, and that they are locked away on the rigs, and Dean gained access to it. He has been suspended without pay.
