TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) -- A fire raged through the top floors of a high-rise building in the central city of Taichung Saturday, killing at least four people, firefighting officials said.

Rescue workers found the bodies of a 40-year-old security guard and three other building employees, officials said.

No information was immediately available about the cause for the fire, but the blaze was visible from far away in Taichung, the island's third city, officials said.

The Golden Plaza Tower is a 25-floor-tall building housing shops and cram schools, and is crowned by a revolving restaurant. The skyscraper is located close near the railway station, in the center of the city.

The fire apparently started on the 18th floor, and moved higher through the tower before it was extinguished, officials said. It was not clear whether the blaze began inside the disco on that floor. The club can contain more than 2,000 people but was not operating at the time of the fire, officials said.

Cable stations showed footage of flames and thick black smoke pouring out of the top floors of the building, with two helicopters circling overhead. They lifted nine people off the roof, officials said.

On the streets outside, people were running away from the building holding bags on their heads to protect themselves against falling glass.
