Public safety personnel from right here at home are providing some high-tech help to Florida emergency officials. Technicians from Savannah and Dublin are repairing damage to radio towers used by law enforcement, fire and other emergency personnel in southeast Florida.
Massive cables that run to the top of a 300-foot tower were stripped away and blown to the ground by the high winds from Hurricane Frances. Crews from Savannah Communications and Motorola are working quickly to get them back on line.
"All of the Port St. Lucie Police Department, sheriff's department, fire departments were very limited on communications," said Don Bigbie with Savannah Communications. "They had lost probably 80 percent of their system and in close to 30 hours, we were back up to 60 to 75 percent."
Local workers have already repaired several towers and systems across the entire State of Florida.
