January 24, 2005 -- A subway fire in Lower Manhattan knocked out service on the A, C and E lines yesterday afternoon, and it was feared full service would not be restored by this morning's rush hour.

Sixty firefighters were needed to extinguish the blaze, which began shortly after 2 p.m. at the Chambers Street station. The fire started in signal wires, which soon ignited wooden track ties. The blaze was fueled by a tar-like substance that is used to seal the ties, fire officials said.

The fire was under control in two hours, but service on the A, C and E lines was rerouted along Sixth Avenue between W. 4th Street and Jay Street.

No one was hurt.
