A 36-year-old woman was questioned in connection with a fire Monday that ripped through a Northland apartment building, injuring two persons.

The fire at the Oak Creek Apartments, 739 N.W. 60th St. in Kansas City, North, was reported about 10:30 a.m. The two injured persons were taken to hospitals, and their conditions had not been disclosed.

Authorities said a woman thought to have started the fire was taken in for questioning. No criminal charges had been filed, and the blaze was under investigation.

Heavy smoke and fire were visible when crews arrived, said Germane Friends, Kansas City Fire Department battalion chief. Crews quickly doused the flames, but seven apartment units had heavy smoke and water damage, he said.

One resident, Tammy Craig, said she saw two residents jump from second-floor windows. After one resident jumped, she gathered several comforters to help the other jump. That neighbor hit his head on the ground when he jumped, and his clothes were singed from the fire. The person suffered a broken arm, Friends said.

It took about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control. The American Red Cross is expected to help families displaced by the fire, Friends said.

No damage estimate was available.
