Daniel A. Nunn fell asleep Tuesday night with bacon still cooking in a pan on his stove.

His Jack Russell terrier also dozed off for the night.

But the dog woke up a few hours later and frantically clawed at Nunn's chest and arms early Wednesday -- waking his owner as a fire roared through the house, according to Fire Department reports.

Nunn grabbed a flashlight and opened his bedroom door to a hallway. Almost immediately, he was overcome by heavy smoke that filled the hallway.

Firefighters found Nunn in the hallway after a neighbor reported the blaze. The dog was found dead of smoke inhalation in a living room.

"He Nunn had scratches that indicated the dog had attempted to get him up," said Grapevine fire investigator Roger Stewart.

Nunn, 49, remained in critical condition Thursday in Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, suffering from smoke inhalation, fire and hospital officials said.

The fire in the 2800 block of Panhandle Drive was reported about 2 a.m. Wed-nesday by a neighbor awakened by her dogs.

"She looked outside and saw a glow coming from her neighbor's home," Stewart said.

When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke was coming from Nunn's home, fire officials said.

Nunn was taken by helicopter ambulance to the hospital.

He had talked to his girlfriend about 11 p.m. Tuesday and told her he was cooking bacon for potato skins, according to fire reports.

A charred skillet handle and a scorched cooking sheet were found on the stove, Stewart said.

Fire caused heavy damage to the kitchen, living room and dining room, while smoke caused damage throughout the house, Stewart said.
