PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- An early-morning fire tore through a 24-unit condominium complex Friday in Northeast Philadelphia, badly damaging the property but causing no serious injuries, officials said.

The blaze appeared to start in the basement of the Bentley Court Condominiums and shot through the third-floor roof, city fire officials said. The cause was not immediately known.

Firefighters arrived four minutes after the fire was reported at about 7 a.m., and had it under control shortly after 8:30 a.m., Executive Captain Daniel Williams said.

The fire damaged or destroyed the entire complex, leaving up to 50 people homeless, officials said.

An elderly female resident was hospitalized in stable condition with a medical problem afterward, but no one else was injured, Williams said.
