(Parkchester-WABC, May 27, 2005) -- A woman and her three children were saved from death in a Bronx fire by a neighbor who braved the flames to pull them out of their smoke-filled apartment.
Fire officials tell Eyewitness News, the four were trapped in their fourth floor apartment at 2010 Powell Avenue in the Parkchester section of the Bronx just after one o'clock this morning.
Thirty-three-year-old, Johnpaul Malpica, a fifth floor neighbor, heard the smoke alarm and immediately rushed downstairs. He said he heard children yelling for help, felt the door was hot and managed to get it open.
Johnpaul Malpica, Neighbor: "We heard the kids screaming and that's when I kicked the door open. I went inside and pulled the kids out."
The mother and her three children, ages: eight, six, and two, were rushed to Jacobi Hospital.The eight-year-old girl was in critical condition with burns over 10 percent of her body. The other children and mother were in guarded condition.
Fire officials said the one-alarm blaze is under investigation.
