Hollea Battles' Eagle Talon burst into flames after it veered into the gas pumps at the Campus Chevron on Monday afternoon. Battles was headed home to Rainbow City when a Ford Taurus pulling out of the Wal-Mart parking lot struck her car, sending it off the roadway and toward the gas station across the street.
``I could see the gas pumps and I knew I was going to hit them,'' she said. ``And I couldn't stop.''
She said she expected to burn to death.
Spencer Madrie, 18, was waiting to pull out of the Wal-Mart parking lot, sitting next to the Ford Taurus and saw the whole thing.
He said he ran across five lanes of traffic when he did not see anyone get out of the car.
Madrie opened the car door and Battles was able to escape. Gadsden fire fighters cut off power to the gas pumps and put out the fire before it was able to spread beyond the car.
Arkamae Grimmett, 50, was driving the Ford Taurus. She was taken to the hospital, but her injuries were not believed to be serious.
