An elementary school teacher lost control of her car and slammed into a light post, causing a transformer to fall on top of the vehicle, which erupted into a fire Wednesday afternoon.

The crash took place in the 800 block of 59th Street N.W. near Riverview Boulevard, according to West Manatee Fire & Rescue officials.

"She said she just remembered looking up and seeing the bushes and crashing into them," West Manatee Fire Capt. Barry Brooks said. The transformer fell on the vehicle and "crushed the roof right in the middle," Brooks added.

Two engines and four firefighters from West Manatee Fire responded to the blaze and evacuated residents in nearby homes as a safety precaution. Fire crews had to wait for Florida Power & Light work crews to cut power in the neighborhood before they could begin to extinguish the blaze with foam, according to Brooks.

Brooks said the woman did not suffer any injuries during the crash and did not require treatment.

"She didn't have a scratch on her," he said.
