LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- A fire that may have started in an oil storage area was under control Tuesday evening.

Black smoke billowed from Spartan Oil Corp.'s facilities just southeast of downtown Lansing before firefighters were able subdue the blaze. At one point, the smoke could be seen from Mason about 15 miles south of the city.

The area was closed to traffic, but bystanders stood watching as the firefighters worked.

One person in the 4,000-square-foot motor oil facility escaped unharmed, Lansing Fire Department spokesman Bruce Odom said. That facility and a 2,000-square-foot maintenance building were destroyed, he said.

Firefighters from nearby departments were called in to help fight the blaze. Lansing firefighters got a call at 4:04 p.m. EDT from a gas station next to Spartan reporting the fire.
