WASHINGTON (AP) -- Firefighters rescued ten people, including two seriously injured boys from a burning rowhouse early Sunday.

The fire started in a bedroom before 3:30 a.m. in the 100-block of U St. NE, said Alan Etter, a spokesman for the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department.

Firefighters carried seven children and led three adults from the home. They used a ladder to reach two unconscious boys in a bedroom next to the blaze, Etter said.

They were able to resuscitate one of the boys. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The other boy was in serious condition. Both suffered smoke inhalation. Etter said the other five children suffered minor injuries and the three adults had minor burns. Investigators had not immediately determined the cause of the blaze.

The Red Cross was called in to find the victims a temporary home.
