Two Children Die in North Carolina Mobile Home Fire
NEW BERN, N.C. (AP) -- A 9-year-old girl and her younger brother died when a fire swept through their mobile home while their mother was buying groceries, authorities said.
The fire early Monday at Homecrest Trailer Park claimed the lives of 9-year-old Yasmine Ashley Ramsey and her 6-year-old brother, Wayne Anthony Ramsey.
Their mother, Doreen Murray, and an older daughter had left home at 3:30 a.m. Monday to shop for groceries, said Stanley Kite, Craven County emergency services director. The fire was reported about 4:20 a.m.
``When the mother arrived she was distraught - very, very, upset,'' Kite said.
A preliminary investigation showed the fire began in the living room. The girl was found in a rear bedroom and the boy was found near the front door.
Craven County District Attorney W. David McFadyen Jr. and investigators will meet to discuss if charges will be filed.
